Types of Car Stereo Speakers

Types of Car Stereo Speakers

For a proficient and good quality car audio systems, car stereo speakers play a vital role. They are exceptional in the sense that they are designed only for reproducing sound frequencies. The audio system of the car is judged by a number of specifications matching the core.

The first criterion that a buyer should consider is the frequency response. It should be higher and wider so that the function of capturing and reproducing the sound is performed in a much better way. In addition, a buyer should also consider the efficiency or sensitivity of the car stereo speakers, which decide how far the sound will travel.

Stereo Car Audio

Focusing on the maximum power RMS, that is, the maximum power, which the speaker can produce continuously, is important if the system is to be played continuously.

Going for a component speaker will make the listening more thrilling since it gives a complete range and quality of sound inside the car. The power of them should be efficient enough not to diminish the riding power of the car. Not only this, while shopping for various types of speaker systems it is always a good idea to listen to each type all of them should sound a bit different from the other.

With the advancement in technology and the demand of music lovers, today, one can find many types of car stereo speakers. The automakers have designed various kinds of stereo systems, which could reproduce certain frequencies. The wider the frequency response of a speaker the larger sound signal the speaker can capture and reproduce. This can be explained with an example. To capture and reproduce treble high pitched frequencies a tweeter is the best. A sub woofer can only capture the low frequency, i.e. the bass.

Today, in market one can find a wide range of car stereo speakers. These are Multi Element speakers a.k.a coaxial speakers, Midbass or Midrange speakers, Component speakers and Sub Woofers.

Multi Element or coaxial speakers consist of two types speakers i.e., woofers and tweeters that are constructed into one. The woofer, which is shaped as a large cone, generates low range frequencies, on the other hand, there are three tweeters in the form of three small cones that handle the higher pitched frequencies.

Midrange speakers are those systems that are designed to capture and reproduce the middle and sometimes some low bass frequencies. A midrange speaker is generally smaller than a woofer and can reproduce frequency range of approximately 300 to 5000 hertz. These types are fitted in the side or the door panels of the cars.

Component speakers can reproduce high pitched frequencies. These kinds of speakers contain tweeters and horn loaded compression drivers. If a tweeter comes above 25 kilo hertz then it is called a super tweeter.

Another of the car stereo speakers is the sub woofer, which is capable of reproducing the lowest frequencies. The sub woofers have the capability of reproducing sound of the highest quality without reducing too much audio signal off it.

Car Audio - TUNE it Up!

Car Audio - TUNE it Up!

One of the best things you can do for your car audio system is to properly tune it. There are several variables to consider when doing this, and I am going to walk to through the most important ones so you will have a good understanding of how to get the most "bang" for the buck from you system.

Assuming you have an amplified system with one or more subwoofers, you can dial in your system to give you the best sound and have the durability you want from it. It starts at the head unit. You want a head unit with a good, strong output signal, between 4 and 5 volts on its pre-outs. Audiophiles tell us that 2-3 volts of good clean signal is good too, but that will require a little more amplifier power to get the decibels we're looking for. You also want a head unit with an adjustable subwoofer level. Start by tuning the stereo without the subs on. Add your bass and treble until you get the desired sound with minimal distortion at the loudest volume setting you will listen to it at. This is generally about 2/3 max volume.

Stereo Car Audio

Once you are happy with the low/mid/high sound from the multi-range speakers, we can add in the subs. If applicable, tune the sub outputs to about 2/3 maximum, and head to the amp. Start at the amp and adjust the frequency and the level to minimum, and turn the volume up to the the same loudest point we were working with earlier. Pull your frequency to about half way, and slowly adjust the power level upwards. If you hit the zone you want, stay there. Keep in mind, this is only a safe adjusting technique with a speaker system that matches the power output of the amplifier. If you want more from your system, incrementally adjust the frequency down slightly with the increases in power level.

Your goal is to get a loud, clear bass from the subs that DOES NOT CLIP OUT under the loudest conditions you anticipate. If the amp clips out, then adjust the power level lower until it is back in the safe zone. Once the system is set where you want it, don't mess with it. Leave the levels on the head unit and the amp alone. The mistake I see with blown speakers and amps is trying to show them off with all the levels maxed out. This produces a lot of power at a high distortion level, which is damaging to the speakers and the amplifier. If you want a louder sound than what you have by tuning your system this way, it may be time to upgrade.

Keep these guidelines in mind when configuring your systems, and you should be able to build a car stereo system that will sound great and have great durability. Good Luck and stay TUNED!

Car Stereo Repair

Car Stereo Repair

Have you ever experienced problems with getting your car speakers to work? Since I think many of us car owners have experienced this problem, I will provide this description of how to diagnose the problem of silent speakers and also give you some hints on how to fix it. Whether you are familiar with car stereo repair or not, this might help you. If it doesn't, contact a dealer who can do an auto stereo repair or search for vehicle stereo repair help online. If your stereo speakers don't work, then try

checking the speakers to see if they are disconnected checking all fuses that are related to the auto speakers tightening the butt connectors to the speakers replacing all or some of the butt connectors

Stereo Car Audio

If your speakers are still not working, I recommend that you test the auto speakers that don't work directly:

Disconnect each speaker that doesn't work from the car's wires and do the test below, doing one at a time. Use a 9v battery and connect its leads to each auto speaker to be tested for a short moment. Does the speaker have movement? Do you hear the sound usually known as a 'pop' or thump?

If your answers to the questions above are 'yes', your speaker will probably be able to make sound and it is likely to work.

This speaker direct test has two possible results: Either the speaker is not able to make sound or it is. If the first is the case, your speaker are dead and you must replace it. If the latter is the case, you should

run new speaker wires and rewire perform the 'popper' tests to get the polarity correct as described above

Now, if this problem still persists you can at least rest assure that the reason is not your speaker. The reason is probably one of the following: Either it is caused by

problems in the deck itself or the connections from the deck.

In this case I recommend that you contact a vehicle stereo repair shop or do a search online to get information about how to fix these problems.

Car Audio Speakers: What you need to know

Car Audio Speakers: What you need to know

Speaker Info...

Speaker systems are very important because they are the units that actually reproduce the sound from electrical energy. When I buy speakers, I only want to get high end. Here is what you need to know, and what to look for:

Stereo Car Audio

First, let's start with the types of speakers that you'll encounter in the car audio world.

Woofer: A large speaker designed to reproduce the lower frequencies of the audio spectrum.
Mid: A medium sized speaker designed to reproduce the middle frequencies of the audio spectrum.
Tweeter: A small sized speaker designed to reproduce the highest frequencies of the audio spectrum.

There are other variations of these speakers available as well.

You've certainly heard of "subwoofers" that reproduce the lowest of the audio frequencies. Essentially, these are the same thing as woofers, just bigger and with more power handling. The result? Thunderous bass! Like the gods sent it themselves...

You might also encounter "midbass" drivers. These are similar to woofers, but are usually used to bring more bass to the front soundstage. Often times, they are connected to crossover networks.

Another type of speaker you might encounter is called a "supertweeter", and reproduces the highest frequencies in the audio spectrum.

Now, to shock you...

When you buy a "speaker", you are actually buying a speaker system. AKA, more than one thing working together to produce a result. Let's take a look at the types of speaker systems available...

TYPES OF SPEAKER SYSTEMS:

Basically, there are two types of speaker "systems" that exist.

1. "Coaxial", "three way", "full-range", etc.

These speaker systems are designed to fit into the factory speaker location in your vehicle. They are often referred to as a "speaker", but have more than one speaker, and will also contain a crossover. (coaxialspeak.jpg)

2. "Components", "Seperates"

These speaker systems essentially take everything from the above speaker system, and break it up into parts. (componentspeak.jpg)

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE, AND WHY SHOULD I CARE?

To restate the obvious, one speaker system has all of its components in one package, and the other speaker system has all of its components in separate packages. Both speakers do the exact same thing, and work in the exact same way, BUT COMPONENT SYSTEMS ARE BETTER.

Why?

I'll tell you, hoss!

But before I do, you should know about the PROPERTIES OF HIGH FREQUENCIES. OK, it's boring, so I'll give you the executive summary: High frequencies are extremely narrow in their dispersion. (Whu huh?) In short, high frequencies (if we could see them) disperse like a string. Low frequencies, if we can see them disperse like a fan. So, since high frequencies don't disperse very well, they need to be aimed at the ears, otherwise we won't hear them! This is one of the advantages of component systems; they allow the tweeters to be aimed! Why do we want this? So when a singer hits an "s word", or a cymbal crashes (both of these things happen in the higher frequencies), the sound will SPARKLE, rather than sound dead and flat.

PIX: tweeterdisperse.jpg, wooferdisperse.jpg

Another advantage of components: Their crossovers are usually higher quality units than you'll find in coaxial or full-range speakers systems. This is good because you'll introduce less distortion to your speakers, and be certain that your speakers are only playing the frequencies that they're designed to play. The result? BETTER SOUND.

The last advantage of components is that they are GENERALLY designed for people who are more interested in sound quality. Because of this, components are generally higher in quality. When it comes to coaxials, even the most expensive models will be eclipsed by the quality of components in the same price range.

OK, OK. I know not everyone will consider component speaker systems. The truth is that they are harder to install properly and more expensive. Of course, if sound quality is your thing, you'll go through the extra effort! Even car manufacturers are getting with the program these days, and include component speaker systems in their vehicles. Even my lowly Honda Civic has 'em!

Crossovers:

So, you've probably noticed me using the word "crossover" above. What you may not know is what a crossover is, and what it does. Basically, a crossover takes a full spectrum audio signal, and breaks it up into different frequency "bands", and sends the appropriate frequencies to the appropriate speakers. Here's a picture! (xover.jpg)

If this explanation was too simple for you, you can check out my crossover page for more in depth info. Thanks!

OK, OK, OK. It's time to get down to business, and look at speaker specifications, and how they affect you.

Size:

This is often expressed in inches (but sometimes metric for european brands), and refers to the MOUNTING of the speaker, not the actual speaker. For round speakers, the diameter is given such as 6.5" or 5.25". For oval speakers, the dimensions are given, such as 5x7" or 6x9".

Mounting Depth:

Basically, this tells you how deep the speaker is behind its mounting. Most speakers are about 3-4" inches deep. This is important to know because you want to be sure that there is enough room behind the speaker to mount it properly.

Frequency Response:

This tells you what frequencies the speaker is capbale of reproducing. Most good speakers will go as low as 50hz, and all the way to 20,000hz (and beyond). However, if you're planning to add subwoofers to your system, you don't need your speakers to go much lower than 100hz. Also, it's not essential for your speakers to go higher than 20,000hz since us lowly humans can't hear anything in that frequency range.

Power handling:

This is the amount of power a speaker can handle without getting damaged. This is usually expressed in two ways: RMS and MAX. RMS is what the speaker can handle continuously, and the MAX rating tells what the speaker can handle in short bursts.

Impedence:

This is measured in Ohms, and tells you how much resistance the speaker has. Basically, the only thing useful about this spec is so you know what amp to hook your speakers up to. Most car speakers (with the exception of subwoofers) are 4 ohm speakers, and all auto amplifiers are built to handle a 4 ohm "load". Most amps can also handle 2 ohm loads, but 2 ohm speakers are very rare. I would say this spec is much more important when it comes to subwoofers rather than speaker systems.

Sensitivty:

Measured in db, sensitivty essentially tells you how loud a speaker will be. When powering your speakers off of a low power amplifier, you want a more sensitive speaker. When powering your speakers off of a high power amplifier, the sensitivty rating is much less important. Also, more sensitive speakers tend to distort more easily.

A quick word about power handling, amps and distortion...

SPEAKERS DO NOT GET DESTROYED BY VOLUME, BUT BY DISTORTION! As such, it is your main goal to limit the amount of distortion that your speakers receive. Not only does this make your music sound better, but it also protects your speakers from premature damage.

THE EASIEST WAY TO DO THIS IS BY...

Buying as much power as you can afford, even if it exceeds the "power handling" spec for your speakers.

WHAT?!!! WHY??!!!

Because, because, because turning up the volume too high is what causes your amplifier to "clip". This is the worst distortion that you can send to your speakers. It is caused by trying to get too much volume out of an amp that can't provide it. SOOOO, you get a BIG, BAD amp with plenty of power. Now, when you turn up the volume high, instead of pushing the amp's limits, you're just starting to get the amp going. So, instead of clipping, the amp sends a nice clean signal to your speakers. No distortion, no damage, NO PROBLEM!

Now that I've educated you, it's time to think about what you want from your speakers...

Stereo Speakers

Stereo Speakers

Stereo speakers are used to enhance the audio system in cars. They are usually described as distinctive in view, since they are used for duplicating audio frequencies. By and large, they are regarded as a very crucial component that constitutes an excellent stereo system.

More often than not, stereo speakers can be classified into two types -- component speakers and full range speakers. Both encompass a number of pluses and minuses. Basically, full range speakers come in different sizes, made up of the tweeter, woofer and super tweeter. However, if you desire the best possible audio quality, then component speakers are the best choice.

Stereo Car Audio

You need to think over several factors to get the sound quality that you desire before purchasing stereo speakers. Apart from the type of speaker, other vital factors to consider are the speaker's efficiency, frequency response and maximum power. These three things are interrelated with each other, and the absence of one may affect the entire sound frequency. The speaker's frequency response must be superior and broader to achieve improved sound control and simulation. The efficiency of the speaker should also be taken into account. Keep in mind that the greater its efficiency, the better the result. Last but not least, maximum power must also be assessed for a long-lasting quality audio sound.

All in all, you should be careful in choosing a stereo speaker. It is suggested that you test out the speaker before f buying it. Stereo speakers come in a variety of brands and features.

Whole House FM Transmitter Review

Whole House FM Transmitter Review

I leave in a sunny country in Europe and my house has a big backyard where I, my wife and two kids spend a lot of time outside almost any season of the year. We are also music lovers and we have tons of CDs and MP3s stored on my computer. I was looking for a solution to somehow broadcast music to the backyard of my house from my music library. We all know the difficulties to stream audio and music from an electronic source (PC with MP3s for example) to an analog receiver (FM Radio for example). This is not a problem at all if you look at the Whole House FM Transmitter which can receive audio from almost any audio source and transmit it to any FM receiver.

At the beginning I was a little skeptical about getting an FM Transmitter for broadcasting music in my house and backyard. The reason was that most FM Transmitters are relatively weak in terms of coverage and they are mainly for use in your car. After testing the Whole House FM Transmitter 2.0 I was relieved to find out that their claims of 150 feet (50 meters) radius coverage are actually true.

Stereo Car Audio

Some Specifications

Before continuing with my review for the Whole House FM Transmitter 2.0, let us see some of the specs of this device below:
Use it anywhere you want (Home, Back Yard, Car, Office, Garage, Boat, exercise room, pool side etc). Covers the entire FM Band Range from 88.1 to 107.9 MHz in steps of 0.1 MHz. This means that you can easily find any unoccupied frequency to transmit your signal. Receives as input any audio source (MP3 players, iPod, Home Stereo, TV, DVD, DVR, Satellite Radio, Computers PC or MAC, Microphone etc). Transmits to any FM Receiver. Covers 150 feet distance but still satisfies the FCC part 15 regulations. Compact Size and light weight (a little bit larger than the size of a deck of playing cards). The new Whole House FM Transmitter version 2.0 is built from the ground up with better features, versatility and reliability. Four ways to power the device (AC Outlet, 3 "AA" Batteries, Computer USB Port and 12V Car Adapter). 30-Day Money Back Guarantee. It includes all necessary cables and adaptors to start using it immediately (AC adapter, 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo audio cable, USB power cable, 12V DC car power adapter, stereo Y cable, RCA Jack Stereo audio cable). If you purchase, you will get also 4 Free Bonuses such as Lavalier Microphone, Free USPS Shipping within USA, 1 Year Warranty and Lifetime customer support.

In the box you will find the following items:
Whole House FM Transmitter 2.0 110/220V AC Wall Outlet Adapter 12V DC Car Adapter 1/8? (3.5mm) Stereo Audio Cable RCA Jack Stereo Audio Adapter Stereo Audio "Y" Cable Computer USB Power Adapter

Testing done on Coverage

My first test on how long the unit can transmit was pretty simple. I just connected a CD player with the FM transmitter using the 1/8" stereo audio cable and selected an unused FM frequency in my area. Power for the transmitter was from the AC outlet. Now, because I live in Europe, we use the even numbered frequencies so I selected 104.6 MHz on my FM radio receiver. After setting up the same frequency on the FM Transmitter, I was able to receive the audio strong and clear on my radio from the living room of my house to the far side of my backyard (around 120 feet away).

My second testing was a little more demanding, but I will reveal this test on my website.

Conclusion

The reviewed Whole House FM Transmitter really stands up to its name as a "Whole House" coverage system. If you are in the same situation as me, that is you like to listen to streaming music from a CD player or from your laptop without being bound by distance from the music source, then the Whole House FM system is a great device to broadcast your music on any FM receiver within your home vicinity. Its price tag has also dropped considerably, so why don't you take a look at the official website of the product to see if it fits your needs. And don't forget the free shipping within USA and the 30-Day money back guarantee.

Learning the Swedish Language Made Really Simple

Learning the Swedish Language Made Really Simple

The Swedish language is not really difficult to learn by an English language speaker. First of all, there are cognates or related words: 'katt' for cat, 'hund' for hound. Secondly, unlike the Romance languages and German, you don't have to bother remember any conjugation of verb.

It's one of the easiest languages to master really (one year would be enough, in fact), but you can even master it a faster. Living in a Swedish household or community was perhaps the most effective means of acquiring the language faster in the olden times, aside from taking a Swedish spouse, but today you can learn the language even without going out of your home!

Stereo Car Audio

Learning a second language, especially one that is not really spoken by many, can be a challenge in terms of motivation. You may need to struggle your way to language mastery by finding your interest first in the language lessons, which includes the correct Swedish grammar, vocabulary, its culture, and finally speaking it as if it's the language you were born to speak.

Well, there's actually more to Sweden than cold climate: history (Vikings, royalty, medieval adventures, battles, empires), Norse mythology, breathtaking landscapes, Volvos (safest cars in the world and no longer boxy), Ericsson mobile gizmos, Nobel Prize and Ingrid Bergman, to list a few. Here's more: once you've learned Swedish, you're not far acquiring two other languages - Norwegian and Danish.

Digital technology has given us means to learn new languages much easier than an Arab could learn Chinese centuries ago. Easy, learner-friendly approaches and the use of advanced gizmos make one's language learning more accurate and faster. So even if you are located thousands of miles away from Sweden, you can learn how to tell Victoria Silvstedt in her native language how good she looks in her bikinis.

No need to dig up some dust-covered language books (if there's anything about Swedish) in the local library or drive to the bookstore. For your convenience, online vendors are facilitating downloads of Swedish language learning audio books. The internet helps you look for the most efficient program you can download into your computer.

There are several programs online and among them, the Pimsleur approach is one of the most easy to absorb. It is designed to help you learn the exact words and phrases used in speech. This software may include spoken audios, games and even proficiency tests.

Since it is available in a downloadable format, you can burn it into CDs, DVDs or Blu-Ray disks and play it in your laptop, car stereo or handy disk player. Or you can load it straight into your pocket computer, iPod or smart phone.

So after purchasing one, you can immediately start your language learning progress even if you have a lot of things to do. You can listen to it while in the tub, while jogging, hitting the treadmill, gardening, doing the laundry or commuting to or from work. Whether you learn it alone or with a company, it doesn't matter. You control your learning pace.

The Pimsleur Swedish Compact, a five-hour unabridged program, costs less than , way cheaper than living for a year in Stockholm. It contains ten 30-minute lessons or modules designed by the renowned language learning guru Dr. Paul Pimsleur. You can find the audio book package at The Talking Book Store or other online vendors.

Although interacting with native Swedish speakers is still the most effective way to learn the language, it also entails tough expenditures and social costs. So why not go digital and learn Swedish in no time?

Car Audio Beats to Listen to While Driving

Car Audio Beats to Listen to While Driving

We spend a great deal of time holed up in our cars, braving long distances, bad weather conditions and traffic jams. Just imagine driving alone in the dead of night with only the sound of our own breathing for company. Fortunately, there's music to keep us entertained (and awake!) during those long hours. The advent of car audio devices has made it possible to enjoy our favourite music while in the car.

Different types of music suit different types of people. The younger set may get a kick out of listening to the voices of Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga blaring out of their car audio systems. "Fireworks," "You Belong With Me," and "Born this Way" are just some songs by these artists that young drivers may like.

Stereo Car Audio

For reggae fans, what better sounds to listen to than those by Bob Marley & the Wailers' signature song "No Woman, No Cry" and Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now"?

Bruno Mars' smooth vocals that exhibit good doses of the artist's pop, R&B, soul, reggae and hip hop influences are evident in songs like "Nothin On You," "Just the Way You Are," and "Grenade."

You are not likely to catch red blooded headbangers rocking to anything but heavy metal beats playing from their car sound systems. Motley Crue's "Shout at the Devil and Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" are just some good choices, as well as Soulfly's "Rise of the Fallen."

An important factor that spells the difference between enjoyment and irritation when listening to our favourite songs while cruising along the city strip is car audio quality. This is of course largely determined by the type of the car stereo system. Simply put, the better the car stereo system, the better the sound.

When it comes to car sound quality, a customised car audio system is your best bet because you get to buy top-notch car audio components individually and assemble them to build your own customised car audio powerhouse.

If you are a true lover of music and spend a great part of any given day inside your car, don't scrimp on car audio accessories. If you get the dough but can't distinguish the difference between the head unit and the amplifier, let alone assemble the various parts together, you had better entrust your customised car sound system project to the experts. There are many car sound specialists out there that combine quality products, excellent service and competitive prices to build your customised car stereo system arsenal that will do justice to your favourite songs.

How to Find the Cheapest Scrap Platinum

How to Find the Cheapest Scrap Platinum

The oldest record of platinum use is as an inlay in ancient Egypt. However, the Egyptians though it was a variation of electrum, (a natural blend of gold and silver.) Native Americans used it for centuries in small decorative objects. Platinum was unknown to Europeans until Spanish discovered it in Columbia. The Spanish called it platina, meaning little silver. It was not identified as a new metal until the 1700's. The metal was introduced into Europe from South America in the middle of the eighteenth century. It is always found in association with other metals, chiefly Rhodium, Osmium, Iridium, Palladium.

Platinum is one of the rarest and purest precious metals in the world. The perfect jewelry material for these fortuitous times, Platinum is regarded by many as a "new" metal. Platinum has been held in high regard as a symbol of wealth and nobility, the true worth of Platinum was underappreciated until the eighteenth century, when the Europeans began to recognize Platinum's beauty. As a matter of fact, France's Louis XVI proclaimed it the only metal fit for royalty. Legendary jewelers such as Cartier, Faberge and Tiffany created their timeless designs in platinum. The world's famous diamonds, including the Hope and Koh-l-Noor, are secured permanently in platinum.

Stereo Car Audio

Platinum reached its peak of popularity in the early 1900s, when it was the preferred metal for all fine jewelry in America. It dominated the world of jewelry design during the Edwardian era, the Art Deco period and well into the 1930s. At the onset of World War II, however, the U.S. government declared platinum a 'strategic' metal and its use in non-military applications, including jewelry, was banned.

Very few countries have platinum supplies, with South Africa (80%) and Russia (11%) accounting for approximately 90% of the world's supply. The yearly production from these mines is only 150 tons, which is 1/25 of the yearly production of gold. Moreover, the amount of platinum that can be produced from raw ore is relatively small. To make a single small ring of approximately 3 grams requires approximately 1 ton of raw ore.

Today, platinum is much more valuable than gold. Although it is used in many industrial applications, including the automotive industry, platinum jewelry consistently commands higher prices than even pure gold because of its rarity.

Two of the best ways to find the cheapest scrap platinum is through catalytic converters and scrap platinum jewelry. Due to the prices of platinum being so high as of late, a lot of people are becoming victims of thieves who steal their catalytic converters. It used to be you had to worry about your rims, stereos and gps systems, well not anymore.

A catalytic converter is used to reduce the toxicity of emissions from an internal combustion engine. They were first introduced on cars in the US market for the 1975 model year to comply with tightening EPA regulations on auto exhaust. Each catalytic converter contains between three and seven grams of platinum. Not a bad catch if you can find one legally. Catalytic converters are also used on generator sets, forklifts, mining equipment, trucks, buses, trains, and other engine-equipped machines.

From the scrap yards, the converters make their way into the metal-recycling industry, where the platinum and other precious elements, including palladium and rhodium, are removed and used to build high-tech machinery, including more catalytic converters.

Although it is being brought to the forefront thanks to thieves stealing the catalytic converters, platinum still seams to be the big unknown in scrap metal. Some great places to find old catalytic converters for scarp are the local junk yards, online classifieds, such as Craiglist, US Freeads and Kiji. Another great place, as usual is Ebay. Some people even find them at flee markets and garage sales. The trick is once you get them, finding refiners that will pay decent scrap metal prices for the platinum. It will be less than what the price of platinum is due to the fact that they have to extract it, that price is passed on to you.

Now there is a second way to find the cheapest scrap platinum and that is through jewelry. Again the best places to find great deals on platinum jewelry is through the flee market and garage sales, followed by Craigslist, Us Freeads, Kiji and Ebay. Or if you are really resourceful you can invest in a metal detector and hope for the best.

What is so great about scrap platinum jewelry? Well, the number of knowledgeable buyers and sellers are low. Most people don't understand that platinum jewelry is 90% platinum and that the other 10% is made up of a platinum group metal. If you call around to your local pawnshops, scrap metal dealers, junk yards, coins shops, and jewelers, you'll find that most of them are paying about the same for platinum jewelry as 14k gold and some may pay close to what they pay for 18k gold. They are taking advantage of most of the sellers out there who just don't understand what they have.

If you find the cheap scrap platinum that you are looking for then your next step is to locate a platinum refiner preferably in your area and get their schedule or purchase prices. Your goal is to locate a refiner who will pay you for the "residual" values in your scrap alloy. The key is that you will need to guarantee that you'll be providing a minimum of 10 to 12 Troy ounces in order to be paid for all your metal rather than just the 90% platinum.

What You Need For a Great Car Audio System

What You Need For a Great Car Audio System

Listening to music in the car is one of these things that we tend to take for granted. However it wasn't always the case that we had access to sound as we drove around in our cars. Some people are more than happy with the audio system that comes included with whatever car they buy but for others it just isn't good enough. Which is why there are companies who produce a wide range of car audio systems designed to suit all levels of the market. However it's important that you have a bit of knowledge before you go buying anything.

There are many things that you will need for your car's audio system however when it comes to amplifiers, the reason you need one is so that you can actually hear the music via the speakers. As with all the items in your audio system, the amplifier can come in a range of sizes and it will have to fit in with all the other items you either already own or are going to buy.

Stereo Car Audio

Of course, no audio system is complete without speakers and if you don't get a good set of speakers you'll not get anywhere near the sound you are looking for. However if you need to understand that the sound you get will also be dependent on the other items of equipment. You will need to investigate all the different styles of speaker and what you want from them. You should also look into the placement of speakers as this does have an effect on how you hear the sounds.

If you have never heard of a head unit, don't worry. There isn't anything really complicated about them. You know that piece of equipment you put tapes, CDs and other media into? Well, that's what a head unit is. They allow you to control the volume, tune the radio and change the equalizer settings.

Some people put a high price on quality, clear and loud music in a car which is why they read up masses of articles on the subject to ensure they know what they're getting and that they're only getting the best. However there are car audio systems available at all price ranges so you don't need to spend more than you have.

Some people like to buy their car audio system from specialist audio or auto stores whilst others aren't that bothered. You can easily buy them if you search on the internet because this is where you often find the best prices. However if you go into an actual store, they may well install it all for no extra charge.

How Does a CD Player Work?

How Does a CD Player Work?

Today there is a wide range of CD players available for the consumer and choosing the right CD player can feel like an arduous task. Style, quality, design och technical solutions vary greatly between the different players. Some players are portable; others are included in larger sound systems. Some players can only handle one disc at the time; others can easily skip between 50 discs or more. Some CD players are very cheap, others are highly expensive. The list goes on and on. Regardless of which CD player you choose it will however consist of three basic parts that are found in all moderns CD players: a drive motor, a tracking device and a laser and lens system. Another thing that all CD players have in common is that they interpret data that has been stored in the form of elongated bumps on a CD (compact disc).

The drive motor in your CD player is the part that makes the disc spin round and round at a correct pace. The drive motor will gradually adjust the speed, since the correct pace depends on which part of the disc that is currently being interpreted. At some spots, the pace will be no higher than 200 rpm, while at other spots the pace needs to be increased up to 500 rpm. As the disc is rotated round and round by the drive motor, the tracking mechanism will adjust the laser assembly and make it possible for the laser and lens system to focus on the miniscule bumps where data has been stored. The laser is constantly being pushed from the centre and outward over the disc by the tracking mechanism.

Stereo Car Audio

The data interpreted by the laser and lens system has been stored in the form of elongated bumps on the surface of the CD. One single bump is very small and no wider than 0.5 microns. The height is greater than 125 nanometres and the length is 0.83 microns or slightly more. All these bumps are very neatly organised at the surface of the CD in the form of a 5 kilometre (3.5 miles) long spiral.

The CD itself is made up by several different layers, including a polycarbonate layer and an aluminium layer. When the laser tries to interpret data that has been stored on the CD, it will first penetrate the polycarbonate layer. The aluminium layer will then reflect the laser beam, and the light alterations will be detected by a special optoelectronic mechanism in the CD player. Since the bumps in which data has been stored reflects light in a different way compared to the areas between the bumps (commonly referred to as "lands"), the CD player can determine exactly which parts of the disc that is made up by bumps and which parts that are not.

If a CD is scratched or injured in any other way, it can be impossible for the CD player to interpret it. Sometimes only a minor part of the data will be skipped, but larger damages can render the entire CD useless. Always store your CD's in a protective casing to decrease the risk of scratches. When you clean your CD's, carefully move your hand from the centre and outwards to the edge rather than just swabbing around. Scratches that occur from a radial movement tend to be less damaging than other scratches.

Building the Best Subwoofer Speaker Box Enclosure For Your Car Or SUV

Building the Best Subwoofer Speaker Box Enclosure For Your Car Or SUV

Box Building

Each type of sub requires it's own type of box. If a sub is installed in a box larger or smaller than what is supposed to, it will sound distorted/bad and could be destroyed. Boxes can be built in many shapes, but it is important that the box volume is calculated accurately to achieve maximum performance.

Stereo Car Audio

Materials

A box MUST be very sturdy. Most common building materials are 5/8" or thicker particle board or medium density fiberboard. If building a box with Plexiglas, do not use anything less that 1/2 inch thick. A common material used to mold complex shaped boxes is fiberglass, but it is very hard to work with, and require several layers for a smooth finish.

Gluing, Sealing

Glue should be used at all joints to fill any spaces. Any spaces will degrade the performance of your subs, not to mention the annoying noise air makes when being pushed out of a small hole. On applying the glue, let it cure for at least 24 hours before mounting the subs. This is a precautionary measure to protect the rubbers used to make the subs from the high fumes that some manufacturers glue products have.

Holding Joints Together

In connecting box joints, it is best to screw the joints every four inches or so using 2" - 2-1/2" screws. Pre-drill about 3/4" deep, so that screws do not split the wood at the edges, especially when working with particle/dashboard.

Should I have a Box for Each Sub?

It is advised to have a separate chamber for each sub. Even though not necessary, here are two reasons why such a directive should be taken: First, if one of the subs blows, then the volume of the box will be "twice" as big for the one remaining working sub. This could cause problems and even damage the other sub. The second reason is bracing. Building a box with a divider in the middle will make the box more rigid.

Ports

Ports must be built into your box design to channel out the air made by the sub's vibrations. If a pre-made port is not available, the most common material is PVC. PVC is very rigid, comes in different diameters. Cut the tubing at the desired length. Consider the volume the port takes up when calculating the box volume. Cut a hole in the box. Make sure the hole is as perfect as possible to minimize gaps between the box and the tube. A couple wood braces can be added for screwing the port top the box. Seal the gaps using a proper sealant (Evo Stick or even silicone can be used).

Bracing

Boxes that are more than a foot in width or length or height, should be braced so that the box becomes more sturdy. This can be accomplished with a piece of wood maybe 3 or 4 inches wide across the box). It is a good idea to put wood blocks on the corners for reinforcement. Always consider that blocks, braces, neon lights, etc. inside a box take up space and should be accounted for when calculating internal volume.

Damping/Filling

Damping increases subwoofer efficiency by dissipating some energy that affects the sub, particularly the voice coil. It is advisable to put damping material inside a box. Pillow polyfill and fiberglass insulation are common, though polyfill is a lot easier on your skin. Polyfill also "tricks" a sub into thinking it is in a bigger box. Play around with different amounts of polyfill until you get the desired results.

Making it look professional

Make the box surface free from holes and spaces by adding wood fill. If you decide to paint the box, then you should apply primer first. Carpet or Vinyl padding is the best covering to use since they easily cover any outer blemishes on the box and give the box a 'smooth' outlook. Be careful when cutting the vinyl or carpet since such cutters tend to be very sharp. Cut a piece of carpet (or vinyl) big enough to cover the whole box. Apply adhesive to both box and carpet (EvoStick works great). Wait about a minute and place the fabric over the wood. For the best fit, stretch the fabric when applying it. The fabric should wrap around and end in a place of the box that will not be seen. Do one side at a time, cutting excess carpet. If possible, add staples preferably heavy duty staples that can penetrate the box, to hold the fabric at the ends. NOTE: Do not cover each panel of the box before mounting it together since it would be impossible to find any 'leaks' that may exist in the box design much less fill these leaks.

How to Upgrade Your Car Stereo to Support iPod, GPS and More Without Replacing Existing Head Unit

How to Upgrade Your Car Stereo to Support iPod, GPS and More Without Replacing Existing Head Unit

With so many options for devices that can be added to a car audio system emerging out there, it is almost impossible to keep up without having to upgrade your system every year, and even then there is always one more device out competing for your attention.

Kenwood seems to understand the quagmire and has come out with a controller that offers help in solving the issue with the Kenwood KOSV500. The KOSV500 is a multifunction device that offers support for the IPOD, Satellite radio, bluetooth, GPS navigation systems, TV tuner, backup camera and more.

Stereo Car Audio

What makes this system unique and appealing is that you don't have to replace the head unit to be able to support all these add-ons. The controller is installed as a separate device into your existing system and it provides all the inputs for the desired add-ons. The major advantage here is that you are able to accommodate more devices in one shot than any head unit out there could accommodate by itself.

Imagine not just being able to play your IPOD on your stereo, but also having the ability to play video from the IPOD as well, if you already have a video screen in your vehicle. That's right the KOSV500 allows you to play video from an external device. It also comes with a Bluetooth input, which allows you to plug and operate your cell phone from your car stereo. This is a great plus given that fact that several states now have no-cell-phone-use while driving laws.

If you have a satellite radio receiver, you are in luck, it has an input for it; want to add a back up camera, no problem, it comes with an input for a backup camera as well.

The KOSV500 system will even enhance the sound of your existing speakers with a built-in amp and equalizer. It is quite possible that if you are a car audio enthusiast, you already have a great sounding system, but it's nice to know that you have the added power at your disposal for whenever the need arises.

As you can tell Kenwood took the dilemma that we all face with keeping up with the array of latest car audio and video devices out there to heart when designing the KOSV500 and made it all possible.

I am certain that one day soon most Car Audio and Video systems will come with all these capabilities built-in, but for now the KOSV500 offers a great alternative to being able to accommodate all these add-ons.

Car Audio Subwoofer Basics

Car Audio Subwoofer Basics

Typical car audio systems have small speakers with limited ability to reproduce low-frequency sounds. Car audio subwoofers can add more depth to a car audio system by reproducing frequencies below 150 hertz. A subwoofer can add strong and powerful basses to your car audio.

Most car audio subwoofers are installed in the trunk due to space limitations in the cabin of the car. Subwoofers are usually 10 inches or 12 inches in diameter although they can be as big as 34 inches and as small as 4 inches.

Stereo Car Audio

Wider subwoofers allow for more efficient air displacement which is critical for low frequencies.

The amplifier for car audio subwoofers can be integrated into the cabinet or installed as a separate unit. The amplifier should have an electronic crossover to filter out high-frequency sounds before the signal is passed to the subwoofer.

Although car audio subwoofers are usually round in shape, recently manufactures have been introducing subwoofers in new shapes. Square subwoofers have been released by Stillwater Designs and other companies have introduced triangular and hexagonal subwoofers. These innovative designs may be easier to install in cars with limited space, but there is no acoustical advantage to nonround shapes.

The type of enclosure for car audio subwoofers influences the kind of sound that is produced.

There are five basic types of subwoofer enclosures -

* sealed,

* ported,

* bandpass,

* passive radiator and

* transmission line systems.

For car use, the most practical type of enclosure is the sealed enclosure because it requires the minimum space and matches the audio requirements of a typical car interior.

There are many premade enclosures for car audio subwoofers on the market. Alternatively, you can have one custom-made or build one yourself. When you buy a subwoofer driver, you will usually receive a spec sheet which gives you guidelines for enclosure requirements. Also check out the spec sheets for power requirements and linear response - a flat response will give the truest sound.

Many people are tempted to crank up the sound when they have car audio subwoofers installed. Although it sounds great, take care - prolonged exposure to loud sounds can permanently affect your hearing.

How to Pick Speakers For Your Car Stereo

How to Pick Speakers For Your Car Stereo

When setting up a car audio system, picking the right set of speakers is critical. To get the kind of sound you want, you have to get the right speakers. If you make the wrong decision, you will end up regretting it for a long time. Here is a proven method for finding the right set of speakers the first time around.

The first thing you need to do is to research what size speakers will fit your car. Different cars will take different size speakers. To quickly and effortlessly do this research, check out some websites with this information, such as Crutchfield or Onlinecarstereo.

Stereo Car Audio

Once you figure out what size you need, the next step is to choose a brand. You should make a trip to the local car audio store and listen to several brands of speakers. Make sure you play the music you like, and have the settings adjusted the way you will have them. Talk about your different options with the people working at the store, and ask about what is popular and why. Of course, check out forums on the internet to gain information and ask questions.

After picking a brand, you should choose between full range speakers and component speakers. A full-range speaker is a speaker that contains the tweeter and the woofer and possibly some additional components. On the other hand, component speakers break up these different elements. Again, you should research your options at the store and online to narrow down your decisions.

When you are ready to purchase your speakers, you should spend some time looking for a bargain. There are many websites online where you can find good deals, such as TigerDirect, Newegg, and eBay. Once you get a good price quote, take that to all the competitors, including your local shop, and try to get them to undercut it. When no one is willing to go lower than your latest offer, then you know you have a good deal.

Finally, you should choose whether or not you want to include a subwoofer with your system. Depending on the kind of music you listen to, you may or may not want a subwoofer. Also, while the size of the subwoofer is important, you should also focus on its power threshold and other features. Size is not always indicative of quality or power. A good mid-size mid-range sub is the safest bet and will sound the best over time.

Now that you know each and every step to buying a great set of speakers, get out there and start shopping!

Types of Audio System For Your Car

Types of Audio System For Your Car

Regardless of the listening habits of the car audio: satellite radio, broadcast radio or CDs, finding the ideal combination of speakers for the automobile results in a positive audio experience. Some research and effort is required to find the correct system. There are certain improved components that enhance the functionality of audio systems in cars and they include sub woofers, speakers, tweeters, iPod adapters, amplifiers and more.

The speaker approach is very important because this is the unit responsible for the actual reproduction of the sound that electrical energy produces. For any auto audio system, appropriate speakers are very critical, since they are responsible for the actual reproduction of sound from a given stereo. When purchasing speakers, only those on a higher end should be considered and there are certain things that need to be known and looked for. In the world of car audio systems, there are various speakers that an individual is bound to encounter and these are expounded on here below:

Stereo Car Audio

A woofer is generally a speaker of large proportions with the capability to reproduce lower frequencies. Mid speakers are medium sized units with a capability of reproducing middle frequencies while the tweeter is much smaller and reproduces higher sounds. A sub woofer on the other hand gives a different bass dimension while reproducing the lowest sound spectrum. A super tweeter is also available and it gives the highest sound spectrum.

When buying speakers, car owners may actually purchase a package of speakers encompassing several or the entire list above. These can also be purchased separately although there is an availability of different speaker variations as well. In the case of cars that are used frequently, it is recommendable to buy components of high quality. There are numerous factors that require consideration while placing speakers in their correct position. Music signals are split into different frequency ranges and sent to speakers that are best designed to reproduce all frequency ranges, while the crossover points are varied and the intensity of different speakers adjusted to achieve a perfect overall sound quality.

Amplifiers are gadgets that take tiny audio signals from pre-amps, certain amount of power from the batteries, and pass them as big audio signals to drive speakers. To derive the finest sound, the available power should be sufficient. Amplifiers deliver power with precision. Initially, radios which were factory fitted had power outputs that were relatively low ranging about three to five watts. The power output for basic models of modern market radios starts at 45 Watts X four. A provision of 45 Watts maximum power puts them in a class of amplifiers that are highly efficient with a high range of 90 percent.

Before paying for a cars audio system from after-market dealers, it is important to see the installation materials and the price prior to the installation to verify that the delivery is worth what was paid for. These ideas are important to consider ensuring a potential car owner purchases a high quality car audio system.
